In which part of India does As Our Own work?

What do you mean by saying each child is your daughter?

Children from difficult, neglected, or abandoned backgrounds have one essential need: a true sense of belonging. We don’t place them in institutions or orphanages; instead, we welcome them into an adoptive family-style home where they are embraced as part of a lifelong family. Here, they are no longer vulnerable but valued, not abandoned but accepted, not orphans but deeply loved as daughters. While we may not legally adopt each child, we are dedicated to walking with them through every season of life, just as any family would. We provide everything our daughters need to be safe, healthy, and well-nourished, tending not only to their physical needs but also to their emotional and heart needs. Through intentional daily interactions, we affirm their identity as daughters—known, loved, and valued members of our family, ready to realize their immense potential and purpose in the world.

Are all of your girls orphans? What role does their biological family play in their life?

We care for children from highly vulnerable backgrounds—many are orphaned, abandoned, or born into high-risk situations that leave them susceptible to exploitation or even enslavement. Our approach focuses on building and maintaining strong, supportive relationships with the children’s biological families, especially their mothers, when possible. We start by fostering trust and encouraging them to envision a brighter future for their children. Once a child enters our care, we remain closely connected to their biological family, understanding their ongoing influence in their life. This partnership helps families see their child’s potential and the possibilities beyond the cycles of poverty and oppression, ensuring a collaborative effort toward a better future.

Can we adopt the girls in your care?

We surround each of our daughters with a lifelong family through a family-style care model that also includes both their biological family (when possible) and their As Our Own family. Our goal is not to remove them from their culture, but to equip them to influence and change their community.

At what age do children graduate from your program?

Our children don’t graduate out of our family, and our parenting never ends. We are honored to be on a lifelong journey with each child.

Where do the children attend school?

As Our Own operates a residential school K-12 for girls that will benefit the most from our Womb to Warrior learning model. Each child has the opportunity to discover and achieve their full potential, whether it is attending our residential school or attending one of our partner schools.

How do you select the girls who participate in your program?

We work with local communities, schools, and government agencies to identify vulnerable girls who need our support. Our selection process prioritizes girls who are most at risk due to factors such as extreme poverty, abuse, or abandonment. Once they join our program, we provide lifelong family support throughout their education and development.

What happens to the mothers of the children once their child enters your care?

Mothers are never forgotten. Many continue to receive support—food, health education, counseling, and documentation help. Our Cornerstone Leadership Academy team also works to keep mothers and daughters connected through regular interactions when it is beneficial. Over time, mothers begin to dream differently for their children, move into safer environments, and even encourage other women to seek care.

You are focused on the girls in India; what about the boys who are in need?

We care for young boys through our Maternal and Newborn Care program and Early Childhood Care program. However, there is a desperate need to care for and empower exploited girls, and that is our focus. We are always considering how to expand our programs to care for and equip young boys in the future.

How do you measure the success of your programs?

We track several key metrics, including school enrollment and graduation rates, improvements in literacy and numeracy, and overall well-being assessments. We also measure the long-term success of our children, including their enrollment in higher education and employment. Regular monitoring and evaluation help us continuously improve our programs.

Why don’t you show the girls’ faces in your publications?

We protect the privacy and dignity of every girl in our care. Many come from highly vulnerable situations, and sharing their faces could put them at risk—now or in the future. Instead, we honor their stories while safeguarding their identities, allowing them to grow, lead, and share their journey on their own terms.

Do you use real names or aliases?

We always use aliases when sharing stories. Each story is true—but names and identifying details are changed to ensure their safety, both now and in the future.
